Around 3 million people in France suffer from a serious mental illness. When they are chronic and progressive, these disorders present complex problems of exclusion. Negative images and stereotypes persist and stigmatize the mentally ill.
Despite recent positive change, the needs of those suffering from mental illness are still insufficiently met, especially in the area of adapted housing and professional integration. The Fondation de France supports innovative projects that rely on concerted support efforts between the medical, social and medico-social fields. Our actions focus on four areas:
Develop flexible housing and service facilities that encourage an outward-looking approach for residents and help relieve families.
Encourage health and social support conducive to more autonomous living while avoiding gaps in treatment, isolation and social withdrawal.
Enable the ill to have access to employment, or to remain employed, or to participate in an activity that has social or economic value.
Raise awareness among the general public regarding mental illness and help change the portrayal of mental health.
